About William Stoneham

William Stoneham I was born in Boston, MA in 1947. I never knew my biological parents, though I heard that my mother had been a painter of portraits. (As of late 2012 I have found my full sister and we have both discovered our parental heritage.)

My professional career as an artist began in 1972 when I walked into Charles Feingarten Galleries on La Cienega in Beverly Hills, CA. I left five slides from my portfolio of surrealist paintings with the gallery's director. A few weeks later I received a telegram from Feingarten asking me to contact him. I signed a contract with him for two years. Two years later, I debuted with a one-man show in his gallery. Henry J. Seldis of the Los Angeles Times wrote; "William Stoneham’s paintings are at their best when at their weirdest. In those instances, the young artist comes close to inventing the first truly, neo-surrealist painting I have encountered to date that extends the surrealist fantasies into the contemporary realm. The best works here deserve the attention of collectors devoted to traditional surrealism without objecting to a good many new and startling twists."

Only one painting sold in the show, ‘The Hands Resist Him’, a self-portrait as a five year old child, which 26 years later would become famous as the internet's ‘Haunted Ebay painting’. From 1974 until 1992, I struggled to provide for my family and continued to paint until starting work at LucasArts Entertainment. I set aside my brushes.

After many years in the computer game and entertainment business - where I learned skills useful to my creative endeavors.- I have picked up my brushes once again, With experience in 3D modeling and cinematic work, I have a more robust approach to painting and the ability to create hybrids of music, painting and animation into unusual video projects.

My newest work is an exploration of figurative and textural concepts influenced by the urban environment and the social/political forces at work in our world.
